Nick Valentine | Fallout 4 Fan art

A sole survivor and Nick Valentine, from a selection of Fallout 4 fan art made around 2017.

The last half of 2017 has been a little rough and I took refuge in Fallout 4 and its fandom. I ended up making a bunch of fan art, and it is nice looking at them now and seeing how they tell my characters’ stories.

These are the female sole survivor (Nora) and Nick Valentine. I started Nick’s painting in IbisPaint X, an art app similar to Colors, which also generates a timelapse of your work that can be uploaded in Youtube.

Nick Valentine

Nick Valentine is a a detective who helps in solving mysteries surrounding your family.

He is also a synth, or synthetic human, created by a group of scholars and scientists who have survived the nuclear war.

Nick Valentine, from Fallout 4. A “synthetic human”, or android. Getting in the specifics of semantics I think he is more a cyborg, though.

Valentine emerged from his routinely diagnostic to two new things: A fallen raider, baton clenched in hand. And half of his face lying a few feet from them.

The detective didn’t wait until the visual sensors captured his partner. The ragged breathing approaching him was familiar. Keeping as much as a straight face as possible — which was easier now, he sighed:

– Ooph. Did I miss anything?

(— from a fanfiction that I wrote inside my head)

I experimented with painting skin using round soft brushes, less saturation and less contrast between colors, which is possibly how I’ll paint new portraits for a while. ♥

Nick is not supposed to have blood vessels under his skin, but I still went with painting some warm undertones in his shadows and translucent parts.

In my imagined story, Valentine gets his face plate almost entirely removed, Terminator style.

My experience in Fallout 4

I played it in 2017 and enjoyed the settlements, vertical combat (shooting from buildings and elevations!) and some characters, but felt like the decision to have voiced protagonists made it necessary to cut important content from other areas, especially in writing.

There are too many radiant quests and you can’t see how your ending decisions impact the world.

Survival mode is very entertaining and adds another layer of the (lacking) roleplay into the game, but I wish its elements could be implemented into all difficulties, much like New Vegas’ Hardcore mode, instead of being a single, separate difficulty mode.

In the end I saw myself using mods to unlock some features I wanted, such as Dogmeat and another companion following you at the same time.
