My entry for #MerMaria , Projeto Maria’s Mermay art challenge 🐚
Project Maria is a MAR Studio mentorship initiative which aims to train and boost Brazilian women artists. Last year I watched Projeto 3 Marias workshop by ICS – Escola de Arte e 3D, which was an absolute pleasure and so inspiring. I remember attending SOUL-ICS ages ago and whenever possible I try to keep up with their events.
Extra thank you to Sulamoon and Amanda Duarte, who both were on 3 Marias (alongside Caroline Gariba!) and whose workshops and live streams are always fun, insightful and inspiring to me. Your communities keep me company and teach me so so much, while also connecting us to other artists friends. Tyyyy ♥
Software: Clip Studio Paint

Since I have a bunch of worldbuilding projects I reused “my” mermaids to expand on their worlds and gave them small weapons. In my stories I like to give the woods and sea creatures simple, natural and functional weapons while humans are judged as adding unnecessary frills and “cruel” designs and ornaments to theirs.
Balpoint pen drawings & process
I’d warm up with ballpoint pen sketches of shells and poses, then picked a couple of ideas and shapes that stood out and refined everything in Clip Studio. Since March I’ve been using more CSP in my workflow and it’s always a pleasure when my pipelines allow for it.
It’s been hard to join challenges like Inktober or Mermay daily, but I try to incorporate small steps and warmups into my routine to release at least a small fresh piece during the month. ♥
Working on mermaids always makes me miss my characters Cara and Jacob as well.
