Concept art showing 3 stages of an Anthro panther character, Eclipse. This project’s themes are transition and moon phases, and the designs are inspired by the Guarani Kaiowá indigenous population in Brazil, plus ancient cultures, patterns and costumes located in today’s Syrian and Palestinian territories.
These were done for an art study event in Marco Alvares‘ mentorship community, Alla Primes.
Software: Clip Studio Paint, Blender (for the hat callout)
“Eclipse” – Final lineup
Eclipse is shown as a baby or an apprentice, then as a young practitioner, and finally as an experienced elder, holding the next generation of cat-people. They’re titled New Moon (baby), Waxing Moon (practitioner), and Full moon (elder priestess).

Callouts and details
Emulating a 3D or game production pipeline, I made sheets with extra views of stage 3’s body and costume. There are detail shots of the dress and its patterns, plus a separate illustration showing the hat, and the engravings found on the coins that decorate her mantle. I also left a few color samples with base colors near the characters.
In a real project more views would be necessary, according to the production needs. But I wanted to give some samples of things that the 3D team might ask.

I’m placing this character in my “Butterflies” fictional world, and basing the costumes on my previous worldbuilding references, which are the Guarani-Kaiowá, and ancient Syrian and Palestinian cultures.
More worldbuilding.

Briefing
On the first days, each artist planned their own briefings by answering a couple of questions.
I wanted to have updated character and worldbuilding work in my portfolio. Moreover, animal, furry, and anthro artists are always in my inspiration zones, so I decided to revisit these genres as well.

Inspiration and references
Real-world and artist references
Ryoko Kui (Delicious in Dungeon), Caraid, Atenebris, AlsaresNoLynx, Nesskain, Dragon’s Dogma 2 (the Beastren)
To me all of these references have a serious, lifelike, dignified aura I want in my art as well. They all have distinctive, stunning styles.

Development – Tests and iterations

As I refined these, the designs gravitated from a warrior/warchief in training towards dancing and a priestess role.
The pose helps with character expression, but more callouts, and, ideally, neutral pose views would be necessary to help production.
Studies and warmups
This sheet has weeks of notan studies, initial roughs, feline drawings, and freestyle shape warmups.

Closeups of the stages’ initial explorations
I coupled these with notan master studies of my inspirations and favorite artists.
