A Dragons Dogma fanart featuring the main character (arisen) and a pawn.
Dragon’s Dogma is an action RPG developed by Capcom and based in western medieval aesthetics, high fantasy and philosophical concepts such as the Eternal Return. It has a very fun combat and addictive RPG classes, looks beautiful, has an interesting companion or party system based on bulletin boards and character recruitment — and has an incredible lore!
Not to mention Dark Arisen is a tremendous DLC that offers a somber tone to the game.
Development
After playing for a few months and seeing it slowly turn into one of my favorite games, I decided to work on something based in the game studying master painters, chiaroscuro, armors and how the metal interacts with the environment, drapery painting, and bringing to the characters the same clothing and equipment found in-game.
At the time I was also getting comfortable with subsurface scattering and trying not to overdo its effect — when semi-transparent elements such as skin or hair look very bright and saturated, because light penetrates their barriers and interact with whatever is inside it.
Pawns are innocent (yet strong), curious humanoids who swear unconditional loyalty to your character and cause.
The initial sketch was done traditionally, then scanned and brought to Photoshop, in which I started adding values and color tests.
Several parts of the painting were redrawn and repainted during the process; which also taught a lot about limb positioning and framing in a composition. More WIPs and notes for this piece.
