Sandman’s Death, painted for a friend. Thank you, Henrique! 🌂
He asked for something involving Death, dark colors, and a nice balance of contrasts. In the end we went for a slightly comics-style Death in an inviting, friendly gesture.
Sandman influenced who I am and how I create, it’s one of my favorite things. So it was an absolute pleasure to draw this piece.
The Sandman comics
Sandman is a graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by various artists. Some of my favorites are Dave Mckean and Michael Zulli.
The main series was published by DC Comics’ Vertigo from 1989 to 1996 and consists of ten volumes, totaling 75 issues. It tells the story of the Endless, which I see as a family, a “pantheon” of 7 powerful beings who personify the concepts of Death, Dream, Destiny, Desire, Destruction, Despair, and Delirium. Most of the story is told via the Lord of Dreams, Morpheus, and his interactions with humans, gods, and other supernatural beings.
The Netflix adaption
As a side note, watching Sandman’s Netflix show in 2022 was incredible and something I imagined I’d ever see. Around 2007-ish I was reading the main issues and dreaming about the rumors of an upcoming movie made by Warner.
Finally watching the characters unearthed something I didn’t know was still here. I cried a lot and loved seeing its adaption of Burguess’ story, Lucienne and Death, and the new Constantine.
10/10. ♥
