Two sketches of Apeas, done after watching Ranking of Kings. I see Apeas, the “King’s Spear,” as a quiet, skilled senior archetype who is loyal to those who have trained him. He is one of King Bosse’s Big Four guardians.
I’m keeping this vague to avoid spoilers, but as the story progresses I think the character’s stoic facade gave way to him showing more emotions and inner conflicts. I absolutely loved RoK’s first season and can’t wait to watch more episodes.
Ranking of Kings
Ranking of Kings or Ousama Ranking is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Sōsuke Tōka. It follows the story of a young deaf and mute prince named Bojji who, despite his disabilities, aspires to become a great king.
I started watching RoK because of the Ghibli-style landscapes and beautiful animation, then I got hooked on the story, the stunning and fast-paced, tactical fight scenes (such as the Bebin versus Apeas scene in the first episodes), and character designs.
I also enjoy how the narrative is paced with flashbacks and backstories of the characters.
Sketching Apeas
Hoping I’ll get to refine these someday. I do like the rough, loose lines, though.
His design is comfy like a bowl of curry, and a bit reminiscent of Titan! I can draw him in my sleep.
His fighting style (attacking from above, perching himself on roof tiles), silhouette, hook nose and “ruffled-feather-like” collar make me think of a bird of prey, like a hawk or eagle.
