DnD Party commission | Fantasy Town

A DnD party commission with a winter fantasy town as background, made to be used as a client’s wall print. Thank you R.!

This client wanted a detailed night snowy scene with a magical, colorful mood, and northern lights. When painting it I was lightly getting inspiration by J. C. Leyendecker’ ‘s brushstrokes and Norman Rockwell’s warm atmospheres.

Software: Blender and Photoshop

Illustration of a night scene in a winter town, with snowy sidewalks and streets. A couple crosses the street as 2 women stand nearby. They're surrounded by animals — 2 dogs and 3 cats. There are greenish northern lights in the sky.

Fantasy Town concept art stage

7 rough line drawings of buildings
Rough sketches of the architecture style we’d see in that fantasy town.

The town has an architectural style and lore that relates to the client’s campaign, so we went after a classic medieval look with nordic and celtic inspirations, such as the iconic Norsk Folkemuseum in Bygdøy, Oslo.

3/4 view drawing of a medieval-fantasy looking house. It has 3 floors, timber framing, and dark teal roof tiles. TO its right are 2 drawings of wooden windows and photo references of white roof tiles and a wooden window also painted white.
Concept art of a timber-framed house and its windows.

A more refined concept art of one of the town houses. It’s one of the more visible buildings behind them, so I made it to function as a style guide and based the other buildings and details (flowerbeds, windows, ornaments) on it.

Easter egg: Banjo, a dog I had.

We needed a generic crowd in the background, and this client asked me if I wanted to add an easter egg among the filler characters. ♥

Gif made for a quick visualization of adjustments and tweaks.

When altering details I’ll sometimes make a comparison gif to help discuss changes.

Rough initial sketch.

This was literally the first sketch made for this artwork. My initial stages are usually very rough, as I use them to discus broad composition elements with the client such as POV and placement.

Costume discussion and references

For the outfits, we used light gaelic and celtic historical costumes. Image: Early Gaelic Dress, Scott Barrett (2006)
