A DnD party commission with a winter fantasy town as background, made to be used as a client’s wall print. Thank you R.!
This client wanted a detailed night snowy scene with a magical, colorful mood, and northern lights. When painting it I was lightly getting inspiration by J. C. Leyendecker’ ‘s brushstrokes and Norman Rockwell’s warm atmospheres.

Fantasy Town concept art stage

The town has an architectural style and lore that relates to the client’s campaign, so we went after a classic medieval look with nordic and celtic inspirations, such as the iconic Norsk Folkemuseum in Bygdøy, Oslo.

A more refined concept art of one of the town houses. It’s one of the more visible buildings behind them, so I made it to function as a style guide and based the other buildings and details (flowerbeds, windows, ornaments) on it.
Close-ups

We needed a generic crowd in the background, and this client asked me if I wanted to add an easter egg among the filler characters. ♥

When altering details I’ll sometimes make a comparison gif to help discuss changes.
WIPs

This was literally the first sketch made for this artwork. My initial stages are usually very rough, as I use them to discus broad composition elements with the client such as POV and placement.
