Fantasy adventure illustration | Mistgate

A fantasy adventure illustration made for the Mistgate Essentials: Origins book.

In this set of illustrations we went with a painterly look that would showcase the setting’s races, magic, stories, and environments. Among our mood and style references were JRPGs, Lineage and Guild Wars 1 concept art.

For this one we wanted something that would showcase the different classes in Mistgate. You have adventurer and explorer guilds with bards, rangers, soldiers, and their outfits can range from heavy armor to formal and priestess attires. We also took the opportunity to show a ghost town overtaken by nature, and an airship, which is a common transportation in the setting.

Mistgate is a third-party setting and rules expansion for Dungeons & Dragons 5e.

Software: Clip Studio Paint, Blender, Photoshop

‘Fantasy adventure’ – Progress pictures

Initial rough: Photobashing and Blender to set the composition and character placeholders.
In this stage I was drawing the outfits on top of the 3d models. Later on I’d repaint their heads to fit the setting’s art direction.

Initial Options

Initial sketch options. One would highlight the airship, while the other would have more breathing room for the city.
