Giant Tiny Art | My Brother’s Hands

A lovely giant tiny art made for the story ‘My Brother’s Hands’. ♥

The characters are Ka, Cairo and Tasina.

You can read the story in DeviantART or check the authors’ blog for updates and asks.

My Brothers’s Hands starts with two good friends stumbling upon a young girl named Tasina.

Cairo is another fellow human, just like Tasina, and Ka is a gentle giant archetype. I haven’t read the entire story yet, but it seems to be about how the group starts with some wariness between the men and the girl, then the two friends assume a caretaker role for the girl, and over time you see how each character evolves inside that dynamic.

The blog is SFW, and a content warning for the story is that it has descriptions of blood and violence.

To play a bit with the message that Ka is a gentle giant sheltering his friends, I made a simple rain animation version in Photoshop.

Development and giant symbology

We used a triangular frame to match the other illustrations (they’re all stunning and come from multiple artists, btw!) made for the story. The characters’ silhouettes also form a triangle shape.

Lineart sketch.

During the lineart sketch stage, I started marking important folds and details in Ka’s clothing.

Those serve to create texture and emphasize the giant character’s scale, in my opinion. Especially the details on his boots and soles.

When I think about iconic representations of giants and dominant, large characters in media, an easy channel of expression for that power is the feet! Such as artworks with the character stomping someone, a building, or getting ready to kick the viewer.

So I wanted Ka’s boot soles visible, but in an entirely different role — he is sitting down, passive, smiling at his friends.

I love painting giant characters because they’re a fun, sensible and easy way to explore, expand and enrich character dynamics in a way that is ‘big and obvious’. Does this make sense?

Anyway — I hope you liked these, and thank you WTT for the collaboration!
