Max Payne art – Paynereactor

A lovely Max Payne art commissioned by PayneReactor to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary in 2021. 🎉

PayneReactor is a Payne, Remedy, and Rockstar fansite.

Thank you Patrick!

Software: Krita

Illustration of a white man wearing a black leather jacket, white shirt and formal dark trousers and shoes. He is holding two handguns and stands on a red background.
Client: Patrick Streutjens
A close-up showing necklace and shirt details.

I remember having gathered reference photos of Max’ outfit, either from in-game screenshots, real exhibitions, or from Sam Lake wearing the costume himself. I tried to extract or copy the tropical patterns from the photos, but in the end went with simply drawing the designs by hand.

3 stages of the max payne art: a rough lineart drawing, a grayscale painting with simple gradients, and the finished artwork.

From rough sketch (we use those to discuss the mood, composition and pose) to the final stages.

Bonus Max Payne theme

Around the time of the anniversary, Patrick had contacted different artists to make tributes to the series, and one of them was Petri Alanko (Control, Alan Wake and Quantum Break’s composer), who scored the Max Payne theme for the event (!!!):
