Character Art Commission | D&D Mikko

A full-body, painterly sketch character art commission made for Frejya Frost.

This is Mikko, a half-elf D&D bard.

I spent some time researching Celtic designs to decorate Mikko’s leather armor, and also created the motif of an intricate deer head design to adorn both the image background and the bard’s guitar. My goal was to harmonize it with the Celtic patterns and the rose thorn design in the character’s rapier.

Softwares: Paintstorm Studio and Photoshop.

A D&D character art commission featuring a bard named Mikko. The illustration has a gray gradient in the background, and features a full-body painterly figure of a character who has long, flow-y straight red hair, elf pointy ears and androgynous features. He has green eyes and full lips. Mikko wears an intricate green leather costume complete with leather armor plates over the chest area, shoulder pieces, and thigh protections. Those leather plates are adorned with golden celtic thread-like patterns. a guitar is strapped onto his shoulder by a thick light-brown leather strap. He wears knee-length brown lather boots, and carries a silver rapier with rose-thorn designs on his left (our right) hand. Mikko poses gracefully and confidently.

Image progress — Color sketch.
Initial stages of a character art commission. There's rough lineart and some color spots to organize the character's armor layers and decoration.
Lineart sketch.
Four rough lineart sketches showing different poses and costumes for a character art commission. These thumbnails were made for a D&D bard full-body portrait.
Pose roughs. In a character art commission I usually start by exploring the character’s personality and main features.
