‘Spells’ illustration | Mistgate

‘Spells’ illustration made for the Mistgate Essentials: Origins book.

In this set of illustrations we went with a painterly look that would showcase the setting’s races, magic, stories, and environments. Among our mood and style references were JRPGs, Lineage and Guild Wars 1 concept art.

For the portal spell, we explored ‘glitch-‘like’ magic effects that could express a shift in reality. In the end we used a shattered glass effect. The woman has light clothing compatible with a hunter or ranger, and we’re suggesting more magic using her tattoos (found in other characters in the setting!) and the enchanted daggers.

Mistgate is a third-party setting and rules expansion for Dungeons & Dragons 5e.

Software: Clip Studio Paint, Blender, Photoshop

Second option. We liked the pose and dynamics, and created a portal from which the character would be jumping from.
First option rough. It’s a pose variation for the same concept of showing a spectral or enchanted weapon spell.
