Giant and tiny story | First Encounter

A first encounter story in which a giant finds a wounded tiny. These are Titan and Eden, characters from a cyberpunk setting that I often revisit when drawing or writing.

Titan is a size-shifting entity similar to a guardian demigod, and Eden is a demon hunter mercenary.

‘Giant/tiny’ or g/t

Giant/tiny is a style of artwork or storytelling that features characters or objects that are either very large or very small in relation to their surroundings. This could encompass a range of genres, such as fantasy, science fiction, or surrealism. I have a bunch of characters that fit these archetypes, as size contrasts and giants are an aesthetic and dynamic I love to explore in my stories.

Titan and Eden’s first encounter scenario

The excerpts below are from a one-shot between Titan and Eden (Ao3).

CWs for the full one-shot: Size-shifting, blood, fantasy violence, profane lore (demons, demigods), physical intimacy. It’s a lore exposition one-shot as well, so there is a lot of reminiscing and descriptions.

‘Ready to execute the offenders, he approached. The woman was trying to talk. Haunting strangers, alive despite it all.’

“We wouldn’t get away with that. Things started collapsing and we had yet to detangle from the insects and debris, then find somewhere safe. I don’t know how, but we did it. Cerberus fainted and I sprayed antihemorrhagics and antibiotics on him. Then I heard you coming and, of course, you’d kill us on the spot. Do you know what it is like to experience you for the first time? It was obvious that you were the leader. I had no resources left, so I tried to talk a little. But this part escapes me.”

Titan tilted his head, in remembrance.

When rushing towards the library he passed the collapsed corridor, slashing some of the escaping insects. He noticed piles of debris blocking the sanctum’s closed doors and the foreign smell of explosives mixed with organic, charred remains. Risked opening the doors and sending guards inside. The sanctum was intact, albeit weirdly and hastily reassembled — things arranged onto odd new piles here and there, and away from the doors. No one to be seen.

Titan followed the splatters of red blood onto a smaller, semi-destroyed room. The horrid scene stunned him. Furniture and insect limbs were melted and merged into a burned mass. The scene encircled a small woman and a dog, like a cursed offering. Hunters. Ready to execute the offenders, he approached. The woman was trying to talk and Titan was glad to this day that he decided to kneel down and listen.

He still remembered each word and how she’d pause for breaths every few sentences. Her hand reaching for the dog. A humid, low voice typical of compromised lungs, for sure. Haunting strangers, alive despite it all.

Afterwards

This is a scene that I imagine happens some time after the event above. Titan approaches the mercenaries that have broken into his lair to discuss an alliance between factions.

Eden remembered having woken up in the infirmary with no memory of the last days. Only a vibrating notification on her smartwatch — to meet her superiors as soon as she had the medical release.

Eden bathed, resisted the urge to double the dose of painkillers, and struggled to slide into proper clothing. Then found her way to Cerberus, and after making sure the hound was alive, she headed to her bosses’ quarters.

She found herself facing Lt. Pallas and a high-rank leader sitting at a tall desk, discussing terms from a small pile of papers nearby. Contracts.

Standing between her and the slightly uncomfortable leaders, Titan towered above them. A minuscule cup of tea cradled in his hand.

“Eden,” Lt. Pallas said and gestured towards the enormous man, “congratulations on your new guardian.”

The demon exhaled, slowly glancing back at them.
