40k alternate universe art | The Legions Reborn

The Legions Reborn is a Horus Heresy 40k alternate universe complete with its own wiki, lore, and character art from multiple artists. It replaces 18 space marine legions with alternate versions.

This was a lovely collaboration in which I painted (mostly!) portraits for the Watchers of Akhet. Thank you M. B. & team for your time and trust!

First Captain Imothes

Imothes was the first character illustration done for the collaboration.

The Watchers of Akhet have some ancient Egypt references in their inspirations, names and designs, so I sketched how to incorporate some real-world myths, symbols and glyphs onto their armors.

Initial pose drafts.

Hori-re

This character is supposed to be thinner than the average astartes, and a more scholarly type. A roll of parchment hangs from his gorget.

Wodjen

Wodjen went for more medieval fantasy inspirations (a torse supposed to serve as padding for the ram helmet), and a dash of H. R. Giger in the organic armor and bones.

I love mixing some eerie, otherwordly elements onto armors and faces.

I liked balancing the heavily decorated details with ribcage or exoskeleton-resembling armor plates.
