Furry dog art

A recent furry dog art pack from 2022. My Tier 2+ patrons have access to a high-res version of this painting, plus hi-res progress sketches, and an .mp4 video timelapse of the full painting.

I wanted to draw an athletic, muscular character and mix the canine head with a trendy sports outfit and a “hair” updo twisting around their ears.

I used as inspiration and references borzoi skulls (hence the long snout!), and also added the boxing glove and forest background to add more storytelling — like a training session in the woods.

Why furries?

A while ago I asked followers in social media to mention something they enjoyed in my art. I had incredible insight (and an ego boost!) that helped me realize there’s a BIG overlap of things I love drawing and things my public enjoys — such as my fantasy worldbuilding, the environments, the armor and character details.

This may seen no-nonsense and obvious — after all, your audience picks you because they enjoy your content, but for me it isn’t always clear. Sometimes your public and followers won’t enjoy some of your themes and experiments, especially if you don’t crate for a small scope of niches.

One friend mentioned being there solely for the human fantasy stuff, and hating the anthro animals and furry art.

I found it interesting that they found important to say they hate the stuff! It’s a strong feeling. I didn’t ask about their reasons nor continued the discussion.

I love drawing those characters to unwind, practice anatomy and create small stories around them, and also as a way to distort and sculpt proportions and humanoid anatomy without so much rigidity. Like giants, I think animals are great to express some emotions and dynamics, much like the historical use of fables in prose.

Moreover, I feel like those artworks are more forgiving when I make the creature’s legs too long, or the eyes too big, etc. Not to mention the furry community has also always been nice to interact with overall, so this is a niche I love to explore.
